Each year, the Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association recognizes an individual whose volunteer efforts have made an extraordinary impact on our downtown community. The DMNA Volunteer of the Year Award is the highest honor offered by our organization. It celebrates someone who has advanced the DMNA’s mission to promote the common good and general welfare of the residents, businesses, and employees of Downtown Minneapolis.
This year, we are thrilled to present two Volunteer of the Year Awards — recognizing two individuals who have shown outstanding dedication and leadership through their work with the DMNA.
Our first honoree is Howard Cohen, Chair of the DMNA’s Safety and Security Committee.
Howard’s leadership has helped make downtown a safer and more connected community. Under his guidance, the Safety and Security Committee has become a trusted space for collaboration among residents, business owners, law enforcement, and city partners — all working together to address safety concerns and share solutions.
Howard is known for being a great facilitator — someone who listens carefully, treats everyone with respect, and keeps discussions focused and productive. His friendly and approachable nature has strengthened the DMNA’s partnerships and helped ensure that downtown remains a place where people feel welcome and engaged.
Howard, thank you for your steady leadership and your deep commitment to our community. Your work has made a meaningful difference in the lives of so many who live and work downtown.
Our second honoree is Laurie Rice, Chair of the Land Use Committee.
Laurie has been a stalwart participant and leader on this committee, dedicating countless hours to reviewing projects, engaging with developers, and ensuring that the growth and development of our downtown community reflect the values and priorities of the people who live and work here.
Laurie was instrumental in coordinating conversations with CPED staff about the future of 800 Washington Avenue and in preparing the Community Survey regarding possible temporary uses for the site, which we officially opened to the public tonight.
Her thoughtful approach, attention to detail, and commitment to collaboration have helped make the Land Use Committee an effective voice for downtown’s future. Laurie’s leadership ensures that the DMNA continues to play a meaningful role in shaping a vibrant, livable, and sustainable downtown Minneapolis.
Laurie, thank you for your dedication, your insight, and your tireless work on behalf of our community.
Congratulations to both of our honorees, Howard Cohen and Laurie Rice, for your incredible contributions and for helping make downtown a stronger, safer, and more vibrant place for everyone.
