Dear Ms. Cherryhomes:
Last month, the Downtown Minneapolis Residents Association, Inc. (DMRA) conducted its monthly Board meeting. At that meeting the Board unanimously approved a resolution stating that DMRA supports the development of a Target store subject to two provisions. First, that DMRA be included in the design of a low-mid priced retail store. Second, that the developer of a low-mid priced retail store consider donating community space for the Downtown Neighborhood.
DMRA also conducted a community meeting regarding the proposed Target on Nicollet Mall. At that meeting, Ryan Companies presented the Target proposal. After the presentation, DMRA conducted a discussion session and distributed a questionnaire. Twenty-seven residents from downtown completed the questionnaire. Generally, the residents were in favor of a Target on Nicollet Mall. Eighty-eight percent of the residents want a low-mid price retail store in the Downtown Neighborhood. Additionally, 74% stated that the Nicollet Mall was a logical location for this type of store.
Ninety-six percent of residents who responded stated that they would like to see a downtown grocery store built in conjunction with the Target or other mid-low price retail store. Also, over seventy percent of the residents who answered the questionnaire supported the resolution that Target donate space for the community organization.
DMRA asks that the City Council and the Community Development Committee consider the resolution by the DMRA Board of Directors and the results of the questionnaire when making your decision about the Target store. DMRA also asks that you consider whether Target would assist the Downtown Neighborhood (Downtown East, West and the North Loop) by donating some type of space to the community that could benefit the downtown residents.
For your convenience, we have included the results of the questionnaire. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Bill Stark, DMRA, Executive Director at 377-6951.
Very truly yours,
Paul W. Barber
DMRA, Chair
